Little Things

I had two delightful days with Ken and Kaja, and wow did we eat well. Before I left today I did laundry, took a shower and hosed off the muddy bike from changing the tire in the rain.

I left a few things with K and K; I had the bright idea I’d appreciate an ice maker, but no, I do not.

One of the pots isn’t recognized by the induction burner.

I finally replaced the Dell computer keyboard I’ve been using since the 90s (with my Mac).

I brought a stool (actually a squatty potty) to climb up to the bed but now I’m using the seat instead. Ken regularly donates nearby so they will have a use for someone.

I did the right thing and made the effort to responsibly recycle a spare phone battery I destroyed while lowering the mattress (not worth explaining). Thank you, Best Buy!

I’ve been finding better places to keep things I use often.

Shopping is an exercise in thoughtful meal planning.

I realized the fridge is too small to keep jars of things that take a long time to get through once opened. So long, Better Than Bouillon and Stubbs BBQ sauce…

I’m realizing a road trip around the circumference of the country entails a lot of hours on the road.

Doing something new inherently makes one aware of little things that are specific to the new environment. I’ve been experiencing lots of these little things every day. It’s like getting to know the ship! Finding new routines and habits, learning from mistakes, it's all good. I slept in the van a whole month at the house to get acclimated, but it’s different on the move. On driving days I’ll often pull into a rest stop and park with the trucks, make myself lunch, and then take a nap, just like I always did at my job. I always had at least 30 minutes before my next class, and it really helped me stay alert on the drive home. It’s helping now, too.

While at K and K’s, I set up the music studio both days. I spent several hours troubleshooting, updating software, and messing with plugins. It was always so frustrating at home, because I could never seem to get to actually making music. All I had to do was turn around, play the Steinway and I was good to go. No Steinway here. I’ve been visiting, driving, visiting, driving and not doing much staying put. But I’m now at Dillon State Park for four days as I wait to camp at a music festival called Secret Dreams the 17th-19th, with a jog up to Cleveland to see my friend Debi in her cabaret show. There’s biking and hiking, and a kayak event Wednesday morning, but I’ll also have plenty of time in the day to start composing. It has been a very long time since I did this, and I have to be willing for the first attempts to be sophomoric. But, I’m determined to “find my voice” with this “instrument”. I have a vision and I will manifest it! I see myself creating evolving soundscapes and undulating rhythms while playing the equipment live. I’m not dance focused, but it could go there. I’m imagining more minimalist, trance stuff.

One good thing about doing the blog on my own site is that I can also upload music tracks; cool!
